Family Care Research Program
Guidelines for Authorship and Publication Practices
The Family Care Research Program has established the
following criteria for authorship of a research publication.
All of the following criteria must be met to constitute
authorship.
Any article published using data from FCRP must have
prior notification before any work is begun to ensure
the intent of the article is consistent with goals of
FCRP. Work may begin once approval is given.
- Authorship requires significant intellectual or
practical contribution in the following activities:
- Conception and design, or analysis and interpretation
of the data.
- Drafting the article, a portion of the article,
or revising it critically for important intellectual
content, and
- Final approval of the version to be published.
Participation solely in the acquisition of funding
or the collection of data does not justify authorship.
"Significant" must be defined, ideally in advance.
- The primary author should be able to assure that
he/she has reviewed all the primary data on which
the report is based and should be able to provide
a brief description of the role of each co-author.
The primary author should be able to demonstrate that
each co-author has been afforded the opportunity to
review and approve the draft to the extent possible,
given individual expertise.
- Co-authors will be listed in the order of contribution,
i.e., the earlier a name appears in the list of authors,
the greater the implied contribution.
- Work of other authors must be cited in the reference
list. Failure to cite the work of others can give
rise to more than just hard feelings.
- Funding agencies must be acknowledged in every publication.
Acknowledgement must include: 1) the grant title and
number, 2) the funding agency, 3) the period of funding,
and 4) the name of the primary Principal Investigator.
Example:
Research supported by the following: Given, B.A.,
& Given, C.W. (9/93 – 8/97). Family Home Care for
Cancer – A Community-Based Model, grant #RO1 NR/CA01915,
funded by the National Institute for Nursing Research
and the National Cancer Institute.
It is best to outline responsibilities for publications
prior to the beginning and put these in a letter of understanding.
Principal Investigators will sanction article on topic
and reserve the right to request co-authorship consistent
with above given they wrote and implemented the grant
from which data has been obtained. |
